The 4 Cs of Effective Training

If you notice on the homepage of, I dedicate an entire section to my 4 Cs. One day, I was sitting at my desk, pondering what was required for me to build a top-notch training program that everyone would benefit from and I came up with 4 things:

  • Relationships: whether it’s between SMEs and designers or learners and trainers, there need to be some kind of rapport for the transfer to take place.
  • Knowledge: What is being transferred is the basic building blocks of any training program. That must be clearly defined and articulated to the learner.
  • Culture: A learning culture must be embraced. A lot of that rests on the shoulders of those building the training. This helps with engagement and longevity of the program.
  • Data: To prove effectiveness, data is key. Whether it’s a short survey or a graded quiz, it is important that learners can track what they’re learning and leadership can see quantitatively that the program is worth the investment.

So as you can see, there are no “C”s. But just wait, because there are!

  • Relationships = Communication
  • Knowledge = Content
  • Culture = Collaboration
  • Data = Conclusions

Ensuring you have taken these “C”s into account helps not only build and sustain an effective training program, but also shows leadership that your training program is an integral part of the organization and its culture.
