For those of you not familiar with ADDIE, it is a foundational framework in the field of instructional design. Now, what do I mean by framework? Glad you asked… I mean it is a way you can structure your overall design process. ADDIE has a bad rep, because some say it is outdated, and I am of the opinion that it is misused.
Specifically, ADDIE stands for:
- Analysis
- Design
- Development
- Implementation
- Evaluation
ADDIE is meant to be a framework and not a process. I use it as an project management tool in that I categorize the tasks that need to be completed into one of the five ADDIE buckets. Regardless of the modality, whether it be instructor-led or e-learning, this categorization helps my team because we can then projectize our work. Foundationally, ADDIE also helps to understand the system of instructional design.
Ask yourself if I’m uploading a course to an LMS, what bucket does that fall in? What about grading a quiz? Developing learning objectives? These are all important tasks in designing, delivering, and developing instruction that IDs must take into account. ADDIE helps organize that.
